Report has revealed that Nigeria's representative on the World Cup hosting 24-man-strong FIFA committee, Amos Adamu, offered to sell his votes in the contest to host the 2018 World Cup.
A popular UK sunday newspaper (Sunday Times) has a video footage showing Adamu requesting for £500,000 for "a personal project" in return for his support to undercover reporters posing as US businessmen. Adamu, President of the West Africa Football Union, was asked on video whether payment for a ‘private project’ would have an effect on his World Cup vote. He replied: “Of course it will, because certainly if you are to invest in that, that means you also want the vote”.
He faces possible suspension from the world body.
He will face an ethics panel hearing on Wednesday (20/10/2010) as part of FIFA's in-depth investigation into the matter. The gravity of the allegations against Adamu and Tahiti's Reynald Temarii, who is president of the Oceania Football Confederation, led to an emergency summit at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. There is a possibility that the December 2 vote will have to be postponed.
The most serious allegations surround Adamu, as he asked for the cash to be paid to him directly. He has few friends among the FIFA hierarchy and is expected to be suspended before the full FIFA Exco has their next meeting on October 27.
The FIFA ethics committee is chaired by Claudio Sulser, a lawyer and former Switzerland international player. The panel can enforce any punishment in FIFA's disciplinary code, including banning officials "from taking part in any kind of football-related activity".
Adamu told The Associated Press at FIFA headquarters yesterday that his hearing is set for Wednesday the same day another FIFA official, Temarii, faces a similar case.
